Badminton Kitchen |
Prof. Jan De Vylder | FS26 |
Why was the kitchen a place only for women, yet standardized to a man's body? Why does every household cook alone?
Domesticity was seen as a female trait for a long time.
The kitchen became optimized, but stayed private. Why not share it, and reduce waste? A space for communication, cooking, and living.
The existing building houses a recycling company, a waste analysis company and a bike shop with two badminton courts. While the two companies are closed off and fenced, the bike shop opens directly onto the street, making it the most public and busiest space in the building.
The linoleum floor is durable and easy to clean. The lines of the courts are already perfectly sized for kitchen counters.
Furniture is movable, except for the sink, which stays in place like a statue. Water and electricity come from the upper beam, following the light. Push the tables together to feed an entire apartment building. Or store them on the side.
All of this happens while the badminton game is not interrupted.
